Executive Board 2009-2011

Icograda's Executive Board consists of individuals who are duly nominated and elected by Icograda Member organisations at the biennial Icograda General Assembly. Members of the Executive Board serve in a volunteer capacity, donating their time and expertise to further Icograda's mandate. Board meetings are typically held four times a year in different locations around the world, usually in conjunction with regional meetings, seminars, or other scheduled Icograda or Member events.



Russell Kennedy
President - (Melbourne, Australia)

Russell is a Senior Lecturer of Visual Communication at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He is an academic and practitioner of graphic design and filmmaking. Before joining Monash in 1994, he was the principal of Russell Kennedy Design, a corporate identity consultancy, and co-director of Onset Productions, a motion picture and documentary company.

Russell is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (RSA) and a member of both the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) and the Design Institute of Australia (DIA). He is a Regional Ambassador to INDEX: ‘Design to Improve life’, the Danish Government’s International Award program and an advisor to the City of Seoul for the Seoul Design Olympiad.

Russell actively promotes a network interface between design education and the profession. He often assists education institutions within the Oceania/Asian region and has conducted workshops with the University of Hartford (Connecticut, United States), Hongik University (Seoul, Korea) and the International Design Center (Nagoya, Japan).

In June 2002, Russell was invited to speak on design education at the inaugural Icograda Education Network (IEN) Symposium in Brno, Czech Republic.  Since joining the Icograda Board in 2003, he has been active in the development of the IEN and the deployment and promotion of worldwide educational exchange initiatives. Russell initiated INDIGO, Icograda’s international indigenous design network, launched in October 2007 at the Icograda General Assembly 22 in La Habana, Cuba.




Don Ryun Chang
Past President - (Seoul, Korea)

Don Ryun Chang was born to diplomat parents and grew up on five continents - Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Africa. He was educated at the University of British Columbia in Canada, the Parsons School of Design, and received his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. Don then worked for several organizations such as Nara Advertising, Design Focus in Korea, Steiner & Co. in Hong Kong, and was Creative Director for the Infinite Group. Don founded DC&A in 1991, which later became one of the leading identity companies in Asia, The company merged with Interbrand in July 1999 and has developed acclaimed identities for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Korea Telecom, Shinhan Bank and Korea Tourism Office.

Don has received numerous international design awards from prestigious organisations such as the Brno and Warsaw Poster Biennale, and the Type Directors Club of New York. Don lectures widely on branding and is currently Dean of the Graduate School of Advertising at Hongik University in Seoul. He has served as Vice President of the Visual Information Design Association of Korea (VIDAK) and was the Executive Organizing Director for the 2000 Icograda Millennium Congress in Seoul. Don is currently advisor for many institutions including the Korean Olympic Committee, Seoul Metropolitan government and is the author of five books including How to succeed in business with design and Brand Media Innovation.




Leimei Julia Chiu
President Elect - (Tokyo, Japan)

Leimei Julia Chiu is the Executive Director of the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO) and a Professor in the Department of Visual Communication Design at Musashino Art University. She has spent most of her adult life working to help designers and students of design promote their work across national and cultural barriers. Born in Taiwan (Chinese Taipei), raised and educated in the United States and later in Japan, she has acquired a diverse cultural and academic foundation.

Prior to her current appointments, Leimei was Director of the International Design Center NAGOYA (IdcN). She has worked with major Japanese corporations, as well as with governments and academic institutions in over 39 countries across Europe, North America and the Pan Pacific Rim. She is an Executive Board Member for the Advisory Council of METI (the Japanese Ministry of Economics & Industry) to implement national design policy in Japan, as well as the Mayor’s Advisory Council on implementing the 10 year strategic plan (2010-2020) for the future of the City of Nagoya and strategic visions for the economic development of Central Japan Region.

She has lectured at design conferences and academic institutions in over 31 countries. From 1997 to 2001, Julia served as an Icograda Vice President and Executive Board Member of the International Council Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) from 2007-2009. A recipient of the Mainichi Design Award (jointly with the 2003 Icograda Congress ‘VISUALOUGUE’ Planning team) and Icograda President’s Award, she has served on numerous competition juries including Red Dot Design Concept Award, Brno Biennial, Design for Asia Award, World Design Leadership Award, BIO, Adobe Design Achievement Awards and the Good Design Award.




Grégoire Serikoff
Secretary General - (Paris, France)

Grégoire is an independent designer and facilitator based in Paris, France.
He is a founding member of The Value Web, and a member of the Accelerated Solutions Environment network. He is also a member of AIGA and AFD (Alliance Française des Designers), and a Regional Ambassador of Index: Design to Improve Life.

Design expert for the World Economic Forum, Greg has run multiple design sessions at Davos since 2005.

In the past 10 years, he has developed his research by focusing on collaboration, leadership, complex systems and creative environments. His practice is multi-disciplinary: process, information, interactive, communication, space & experience design. He leads collaborative design sessions, addressing strategy, transformation, change management, learning and innovation.

Greg studied at ESJ (Ecole Supérieure de Journalisme), his professional background includes work at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Paris, the French Embassy in Moscow and with the NGO “Médecins du Monde” (Doctors of the World) in Chechnya and Kosovo.




David Berman
Treasurer - (Ottawa, Canada)

David Berman has over 25 years of experience in award-winning communication design, including Web design and software interface development. As an author (Do Good Design), expert speaker, graphic designer, communications strategist, and typographer, his professional work has brought him to over 25 countries in the past few years. His clients include IBM, Accenture, the International Space Station, the Canadian Government, and the Aga Khan Foundation. David's work includes award-winning projects in the application of clear writing and design sustainability principles.

David has helped establish a code of ethics that embraces social responsibility for graphic designers in Canada, United States, Norway and other countries. The Society of Graphic Designers of Canada ratified his draft nationally in May 2000. He served as President of the first elected board of the Association of Graphic Designers of Ontario, North America's first accredited graphic design organisation, from 1997 to 1999. He led the development of the association's General Bylaw and Rules of Professional Conduct and authored Ontario's accreditation examination section on ethics and professional responsibility. He has served as the National Ethics Chair for Graphic Design in Canada since 2002.

David has recently been named a high-level advisor to the United Nations on how design can be used to help fulfill the Millennium Development Goals

Iva Babaja
Vice President - (Zagreb, Croatia)

Born in Zagreb, Croatia, Iva studied at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. She has worked extensively as a photographer, art director and freelance designer for major advertising agencies, publishers and cultural institutions. She is currently Creative director at Euro RSCG agency in Zagreb, working for many local and international clients. Her work has been included in many exhibitions and publications both in Croatia and abroad.

She is also committed to doing pro bono work for worthy projects and is an active member of the international design community.  Within Icograda, she is working on several membership projects, while also dealing with the recognition and respect of the design profession in her native Croatia. She is founder and president of the Association for Promotion of Visual Culture and Communications (VIZUM) and has worked extensively on the organisation and execution of ZGRAF and many other international exhibitions and projects. Iva is also a member of Croatian Designers Society (HDD), Association of Artists of Applied Arts (ULUPUH) and Art Directors Club New York.




Jason Fan

Vice President - (Taiwan, Chinese Taipei)

Jason Fan has more than 20 years experience in graphic design. He received his diploma of Applied Art from National Taiwan Academy of Arts in 1981. After his two year military service and working as a designer for two years in Taipei, he went to New York and later received his Master’s Degree from Pratt Institute in 1989. Returning to Taiwan, Jason started to work as the deputy manager of graphic design section at the Sunrise Department Store, the leading brand in the fashion category at that time. One year later, he founded Signet Design Company, which soon became one of Taiwan’s leading design firms.

Jason was elected President of Taiwan Graphic Design Association for 2006-2008. During his term, he not only broadened the interfaces with more cross-disciplinary programs, such as applications of Taiwanese indigenous culture and arts in the design of daily goods, but also created the bi-monthly Energy Bar to connect with experts from different fields, as Jason believed in the importance for designers to appreciate things beyond design prospective. He worked as the CEO of the Cultural & Creative Industries Center at National Taiwan Normal University until August 2009. Jason was dedicated to providing more resources for various Taiwan graphic design communities and related associations, including holding regular meetings to increase understanding between each other and developing the closer integration of the communities. He was the co-director of "2008 and 2009 Taiwan International Design Competition / Student Section", considered as the highest prize for student design competition nationwide. Jason is currently one of the originators and member delegates of Taiwan Design Alliance, a respected multidisciplinary association of Taiwanese designers, one of the partners of the 2011 IDA Congress.

Jason has received numerous design awards, including the golden prize of Taiwan National Graphic Design, Judge’s Award of the Graphic Design in China and Excellent Awards from the Hong Kong Designers Association. In 2007, he was awarded the distinguished alumni of the National Taiwan University of Arts. In order to train more young professionals, Jason teaches part-time at local art institutions and is often invited to be the speaker and juror in nationwide and overseas awards schemes. Jason has traveled to nearly 30 countries so far.
 
Jason believes that every designer is a power plant, who is willing to make a contribution to our society. Once we are able to resonate with the power of design, the environmentally-friendly and sustainable resource, we can lead the whole world to a more positive direction.     




David Lancashire AGI

Originally from the United Kingdom, David is based in Melbourne, Australia. David’s work has been recognised with many awards and has appeared in numerous Australian and international design publications. With more than 25 years in the design industry, David’s experience encompasses a wide range of design disciplines including corporate identity programs, packaging, publication design, exhibition and environmental design.

A former Victorian President of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) and president of the Melbourne Art Directors Club, David was a member of the Advisory Committee at the RMIT Photography Department, the Advisory Board of Australia Post, and the Graphic Design Advisory Committee for Phillip Institute of Technology which became The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

David’s most recent work in the area of interpretative design has been awarded and praised by his peers, especially his collaboration with indigenous cultures that has resulted in world class visitor centres in remote parts of Australia.




Omar Vulpinari
Vice President - (Treviso, Italy)

Born in the Republic of San Marino in 1963 and raised in the United States. Today he lives in Treviso, Italy.

Since 1998 creative director of the Visual Communication Department at Fabrica, the Benetton research center on communication founded by Oliviero Toscani. Directing projects for United Nations, Witness, Amnesty International, Reporters Without Borders, United Colors of Benetton, Coca-Cola, Alessi, Porsche, Vespa, The New Yorker, Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Electa, Mediaset, Fox International. Fabrica's communication design work under his direction has been featured by major international press and exhibitions at the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, the National Museum of Arts and Traditions in Rome, the Vivid Gallery in Rotterdam, the GGG in Tokyo, the DDD Gallery in Osaka, the ZeroOne Design Center in Seoul. In 2006 it was featured in the exhibition 'Fabrica: Les Yeux Ouverts' at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Co-curator for Phaidon's Area and contributor to Steven Heller's Becoming a Graphic Designer for Wiley and The Education of a Graphic Designer for Allworth Press. His independent work has recently been selected by Taschen for the second edition of Design Now.

Omar teaches at the University of San Marino - University of Venice, where in 2006 he directed of the lecture series 'Graphic Design and Social Concern'. He is a frequent speaker, juror and workshop leader for major international design events organized by Icograda, AGI, ISTD, AIGA, JAGDA, Profile Intermedia, GraficEurope and numerous others.

He studied at the University of Bologna and the Albe Steiner Center in Ravenna.




Xiao Yong
Vice President - (Beijing, China)

Xiao Yong is a renowned graphic designer and design educator, currently a professor at Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China and a visiting professor at University of Arts London. He also serves as a Board member of CUMULUS and is a member of the Global Agenda Council on Design. He has taught and lectured in 300 universities in over 50 countries. From 2001-2003, he served as the Chief Editor of Art and Design Magazine .

Xiao Yong studied in Finland, Germany and Denmark from 1991-1995, receiving his MA from University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1994. He has been a speaker in many international conferences including the World Economic Forum and was designated as one of the “Top 10 Chinese designers” in 2007.

XiaoYong Design is recognised as one of the most influential design firms in China. He designed the medals for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and his work has been featured in design annuals and magazines internationally.

Xiao Yong believes design plays an important role in the creative economy - it should create and add value to our society. For a sustainable future, he believes that we should enhance design awareness, especially in developing countries, and that closer global collaboration in design is needed.
