Shibui Day Spa

Student designer: Jenny Bleechmore
School: Box Hill Institute of TAFE, Victoria
Award: First Prize winner in Interior Decoration, Australasian Student Design Awards 2010

About the design

The aim of the design is to create a luxurious Asian inspired day spa using existing shell with an emphasis on sustainability.

Combining the beauty of traditional Japanese elements with a modern day spa provides the latest luxury within a Zen environment. The reception area's white interior is complemented by a feature wall covered with a cherry blossom design wallpaper, instantly calming and desensitising the mind from the outside world transporting you to a place of peace and quiet. Stepping through circular doorways with shoji screen doors, a scene reminiscent of a Japanese village greets unfolds as you enter the treatment areas. A reflection pond  located  centrally underneath a skylight in the opened umbrella styled ceiling floods the courtyard in natural light. Influenced by natural sand paths the flooring is a quartz carpet evoking an outdoor feel while remaining comfortable underfoot.

Sustainable Thinking

Antique and vintage pieces make up the majority of furniture, modifying dressers to be repurposed as vanities in changerooms as well as treatment rooms while kimonos, scrolls and screens act as decorative elements. Stained marine  plywood walls are moisture resistant and an environmentally friendly alternative to hardwood, it is also lighter and more versatile.Double glazed windows ensure excellent sound and thermal properties. Shoji styled walls are constructed using laminated opaque white glass minimising noise and ensuring privacy.

Locally produced spa equipment offering low water usage designed for Australian conditions have been selected. A rain water tank is to be installed for the laundry and staff areas. The quartz carpet flooring requires minimal maintenance, sweep and vacuum only, and creates an organic, earthy ambience.
