10 - 30 October 2008
SEOUL DESIGN OLYMPIAD 2008
The Seoul Design Olympiad 2008 is a world design festival, organised by Seoul Metropolitan Government to enhance and promote Seoul as the center of world design, in line with its designation as the World Design Capital in 2010. It consists of Seoul Design Conference, Seoul Design Exhibition, Seoul Design Festival and Seoul Design Competition.
Theme
The theme for the Seoul Design Olympiad 2008 is "Design is AIR". It is essential to all life; it is ubiquitous; it is multi-sensory; it is energy; and it is humble. Design in the 20th century was described as 'Earth' while design in the 21st century will be considered 'Air'. Beyond the boundaries of material and immaterial, digital technology in the 21st century has produced new design paradigms with connectivity and convergence. 'Design is AIR" addresses the design discourse and exploration for the design of life, which communicates with nature's elements: earth, water, fire and wind. As air symbolises the energy flow within the void, design signifies the living energy that flows in our lives.
Seoul, designated as the World Design Capital 2010
The World Design Capita (WDC) is a project promoted by the International Design Alliance (IDA) and entrusted to the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) for the purpose of 'highlighting the importance of design, developing the economy and enriching the culture through the use of design under the leadership of cities, and improving the quality of life within those cities.' The title is conferred biannually through a global competition. The selected city maintains the title of the World Design Capital for a period of one year. Torino, Italy, was selected as the WDC pilot city in 2008, and Seoul became the first WDC to be selected from an official competition last October.
