WORLD GRAPHICS DAY

Montreal (Canada) - 27 April, Icograda's anniversary, was designated World Graphics Day in 1995. It is an opportunity to recognise communication design and its role in the world. Celebrations large and small have marked the occasion in ways as diverse as the community that Icograda represents.

What drives Icograda is a shared passion that design can be a medium for progressive change. Wherever my travels take me around the globe, I see this belief translated into action through the projects and programs of our Members. We call it 'leading creatively'.

To mark World Graphics Day 2008, we want to know how you use design to effect change in the world around you. It can be on any scale - local, regional, national or international. From raising awareness at your daughter's school to working with your clients in our global marketplace.

Tell us about how you translate 'leading creatively' into action — about the kind of change design can facilitate.

Brenda Sanderson is Icograda's Managing Director. For additional information on World Graphics Day, see this week's Feature.

Rob, wonderful to hear that you are continuing the tree planting tradition. The link between World Graphics Day and tree planting is almost a decade old. In August and November 1999, the Marmara region of Turkey was devastated by two earthquakes. More than 15 000 people died and 200 000 were left homeless. GMK, the Turkish Society of Graphic Designers and CEKUL, the Foundation for the Protection and Promotion of the Environmental and Cultural Heritage, came together with Icograda to initiate the 'Icograda Forest' as a response to the disaster. Sadik Karamustafa coordinated the project on Icograda's behalf. Two empty fields were designated and designers from around the globe were invited to contribute USD $5 for each tree planted by CEKUL on their behalf. Proceeds from the campaign were contributed to a housing project initiated by CEKUL in the Marmara earthquake region. Since this initial project, trees have been planted in Australia, South Africa, and now, Canada.

I co-curated an exhibition linking designers from Seattle, USA and Havana, Cuba, which opens April 17th at el Centro Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales. Working with designers and curators from Cuba, we put together a concrete example of how we in the U.S. can work across boundaries despite embargoes, trade sanctions, etc. imposed by our own government. It's called The Seattle-Havana Poster Show and it runs through May 17th. If you happen to be in Havana, stop in for World Graphics Day. More information at www.seattlehavana.com.

Marina, your series of roundtables on gender and design is timely and fascinating. Great to see Icograda Education Network (IEN) members involved in this project. Hello all, I just finished up a 6 week screen printing class with 10-12 year old kids that was part of a non-profit who works to bring art into public schools. Even though the purpose was to teach them how to screen print, I introduced the idea of "…is not a robot" - meaning, they have the ability to make their own choices in life. So in creating the posters I asked them "what do they care about in the world?" So on the weekend of World Graphics Day my small gallery will have their work up. You can see images of the kids and their posters at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/14868235@N02/sets/72157604374187083/ As designers we have the ability to do some good things. And I feel it is our responsibility every chance we get to help not only our clients, but students of all ages think about the world around them and how the decisions we make, can effect all our lives. Thanks. stu.

Last year SV Associates http://www.staendige-vertretung.com celebrated World Graphics Day with an evening of informal discussion, drinks and food. The success of this evening resulted in a series of evenings with design colleagues throughout 2007 and has now lead to us initiating »Blast« a new conference on multidisciplinary design. This year SV Associates will be celebrating with a World Graphics Day Brunch in the studio. Attendees have been asked to bring a piece of work as a discussion point exploring the role of design in our everyday lives. If you would like to attend the brunch or learn more about the conference please mail The Korrespondent (k@svberlin.com). Nick

Hi Brenda, We had met in Design Local, Mumbai. I have been helping a local organisation of artists(mostly they are not designers as such, but come from fine arts background and make a livelihood making signages and display hoardings) and when I told them of the World Graphics Day, they have decided to put up a live art demonstration(the members and other artists throw their creativity on a big canvas) in the town square in Kottayam, India.

Hello. A momentous month for design, communication and creativity! In Australia the recent 2020 Summit’s 1,000 participants including a representation for “Towards a Creative Australia” took the opportunity to put forward ideas on how our country can better inspire and channel creative output for the benefit of the Australian population. The case was ably presented by John Redmond - Dean, Faculty of Art and Design Monash University supporting the concept of 'Creativity is central to sustaining and defining the nation, fuelling the imaginations of citizens, nurturing our children and nourishing healthy communities. Indigenous culture is central to this'. This was an inspired opportunity, one that seems so rare particularly in a country that has often turned its back on a wealth of creative talent. A great pity that more countries aren't inspired to support such initiatives as World Graphics Day and nurture creativity at all levels in their community. Thank you to everyone who participated in marking World Graphics Day 08. The spirit of collaboration, as active participants in our community, personifies what it means to 'lead creatively'. Personally, I spent the day in Saskatoon as a juror for the 2008 GDC Scholarships. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with some of my Canadian colleagues and to get a glimpse of the next generation of designers who are poised to make their mark on our profession.
