SERIES OF GAVELLA POSTERS
Member of: HDD, Croatia
About the design
'In The Solitude of The Cotton Fields' - by B.M.Koltes. The solitude
that is shown in the play, is also presented on the poster, through the
scaned detail from an earlier used photo. Whole concept was based on an
esotheric atmosphere that prevails in the play.
'The
Golden Calf' - by Iljf & Petrov. The poster showed the face of a
real person Miss Carmen Miranda (Maria de Carmo Miranda de Cunha), a
Brazilian Hollywood star from the 1930s known as the 'Brazilian
bombshell'. She is indicating with words the place - Rio de Janeiro and
the time - early thirties. Her earring in the center of the poster is
referring to the mythological origin of 'the golden calf' (the idol of
wealth, according to the Bible Moses did not make himself present for a
while among the people so they asked Aaron to give them a new god, and
he tells them to take golden earring off the ears of their wives, and
makes a golden calf out of them- a new god of material goods who
replaced the god of spirit). We added color to the black-and-white
picture so as to point out the satirical element of the show. The
layout was a part of the series of posters for the 1999/00 season.
'Ah,
Nora, Nora' - a compilation of Ibsen's 'Doll House' and the
contemporary play by Elifrieda Jelinek; 'What Happened when Nora Left
her Husband'; the common denominator is the woman treated as a doll.
This was the first in a series of billboard posters created for the GDK
Gavella for the 1999/00 season.
'Lion in the Winter' - by
J. Goldman, a story about the struggle for the crown in a royal family
in 12. Century, 'serious productions' of GDK Gavella. The
disintegration of the royal family because of the crown we interpreted
visually by literal 'disintegration' of the upper right corner of the
poster, where only blank space was left. This disintegration looks like
snow because the play takes place on Christmas Eve.
