South African Communication Design Council
The South African Communication Design Council (think) was established in 2001 to serve the needs of the design professional in South Africa. It is the only organisation in this country specifically catering for the graphic design community. Think is affiliated to Design South Africa.
Think works to provide an appropriate voice for the profession of graphic design in South Africa to its members, the public, government, and the business community.
Think strives to advance excellence in the graphic design profession and to employ its influence and cultural force toward the benefit of all South Africans. In this respect Think actively works to provide opportunities for and organise the holding of permanent or periodic exhibitions either of the work of members or any works of interest or service to its members and the education of the public in respect of graphic design.
Think also encourages educational institutions to develop qualified graphic design students who are well trained and prepared for a professional career in the graphic design industry. In this connection think presents an annual student awards programme, the thinkahead Awards, which serves to promote graphic design as a career choice and present opportunities for winners to fast track their careers.
Sappi is think's primary sponsor by means of funding and professional assistance to the council and are co-presenters with think of the thinkahead awards.
It also works in conjunction with other organisations in the broad design community and with related areas to achieve shared goals in respect of the industry. At the request of the organisers Think provided the judging panels for the 2004 design Loeries awards. At present Think is in the early stages of a project development with Design Indaba.
At present Think has its strongest membership base in Gauteng consisting of the major firms and independent designers as well as representatives in Durban and Cape Town. Currently the Council is conducting a membership drive to expand its base throughout the country.
