Hong Kong Design Institute
Established in 2007, Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) is a leading design institution in Hong Kong under the VTC Group, providing quality education to cultivate knowledge, professionalism and new talents underpinning the creative industries in Hong Kong. HKDI integrates all design programmes in the former departments in Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) to offer a broad range of programmes from foundation studies, to Higher Diploma, and on to degree programmes offered in collaborations with reputable overseas universities. Programmes offered spanning across areas of visual communication, advertising, printing and digital media, fashion and image design, industrial and product design, interior and exhibition design, architectural and landscape design.
To achieve greater interdisciplinary synergy, the four new academic departments, including Department of Design Foundation Studies, Department of Communication Design and Digital Media, Department of Fashion and Image Design and Department of Product and Interior Design, is now operating at the new purpose-built campus at Tseung Kwan O.
The new HKDI campus is a winning design by a French Architect in an International Architectural Design Competition. The architecture derives its inspiration from the idea of a white sheet of paper, a metaphor for creativity symbolizing the universal medium of designers. It provides students with a creative and conddependent learning, self-confidence and free thinking.
HKDI adopts a “Think and Do” approach through contemporary curriculum and active collaborations with industries. The comprehensive design programmes are enriched with activities to nurture strengths with creative thinking skills, cultural sensitivity and global perspectives. The self-motivated study and guided learning enhances students’ development on independent thinking and self-confidence.
