GDC upcoming highlights for 2008

Canada's national graphic design association, the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC), has big plans for 2008. With 9 chapters across the country, and more than 1,000 members, this year is set to be the organization’s best year ever.

Graphex 2008 Awards Gala Announced

The GDC recently launched Graphex 2008, Canada’s national biennial graphic design competition. The Graphex awards gala will take place in Vancouver on March 28, 2008. After the winners are announced, a traveling exhibition of the winners will makes its way across Canada.

Graphex 2008 received an unprecedented number of entries from across Canada. The judges were comprised of seven top international design influencers, including Michael Jager (Burlington, USA), Ronald Kapaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Stanley Hainsworth (Seattle, USA), Sam Carter (Vancouver, Canada), Peter Steiner (Montreal, Canada), Jamie Koval (Chicago, USA) and Marian Bantjes (Bowen Island, BC, Canada).

New GDC website to be unveiled Spring 2008

Whether or not you design with pixels or a T-square, the GDC’s revamped website will have something of interest to you. With an on-line presence dating back to 1996 with several upgrades since then, the organization expects to unveil its revamped website February 2008. In response to suggestions from members across Canada, the new site will feature such web 2.0 technologies as blogs and dynamic event registration, dues payments, enhanced media capabilities and much more. The site design (provided by Tétro Design, Winnipeg) promises to bridge the user interface with a robust, easy-to-use content management system (supplied by Smallbox Software, Vancouver) that will enable GDC staff, executive and stakeholders to remotely update the site from anywhere in the world.

As envisioned by the National website committee, chaired by David Coates (Vancouver), “the goal is to develop a site that design organizations worldwide look to for inspiration.” It promises to be the destination site for graphic designers, students and design buyers in Canada and abroad. Stay tuned for an announcement from the GDC announcing the launch date.
